This area is a relatively small part of the magnificent Haute-Savoie region. Leading north westwards from Morzine the St Jean d'Aulps Vallee is about 40 miles south of Lac Leman (Lake Geneva) on route D902 . The drive from Geneva Airport via Thonon-les-Bains takes about 90 minutes.
In the summer it provides fantastic walking and climbing terrain with breath-taking views. In the winter it is a very popular ski resort. Care is needed at all times and in all weathers.
The Haute-Savoie region is so large and contains so many mountains you can walk for hours without meeting another walker. Even so valleys, settlements and roads are never to far away from its well marked trails should you need an escape route. Coverage for mobile phones is very good making it possible to send progress reports from each waypoint e.g. pre-prepared text messages.
Most of the mountains bordering this valley are over 2,000m (7,000 feet) high, i.e. over twice the height of Snowdon. |
